I absolutely love quilt-alongs. Brittany tells me I should only quilt when it is something to do with Stitches of Love – like a new pattern, a freebie to share with all of you, etc. But I can’t help myself. I have to play! So Brittany is letting me do the Comfort and Joy Quilt-Along on one condition – that I promise to blog about it every month and never fall behind on blocks. Yesh, she is one tough cookie! So, join me in this quilt along and keep me company – promise it will be fun!
What is a Quilt-Along?
Brittany tells me I need to explain this just in case. A quilt-along is where one blogger/quilter picks a fun quilt pattern or project and sets a schedule of when they will be working on the quilt or project. They tell everybody about it and invite them to join them. Then, on the designated dates everyone shares their progress. Sometimes the projects and patterns are free. Sometimes you have to buy them. Just depends on who is hosting and what the purpose is. Sometimes you have all the fabric you need in your stash. Sometimes you have to buy more fabric. (Golly, more fabric? OK!)
Who is Hosting this Quilt Along?
This quilt-along is being hosted by Judy Laquidara of Patchwork Times. She shares on her blog that she fell in love with Pat Wys’s Comfort and Joy Christmas Quilt and wanted to make it. To add in some fun she decided to make it a quilt-along! Every month on the 24th she is going to announce which blocks she is going to work on for the next month. Then we can all work on the same blocks, too! She will share pictures of her progress and we can all share pictures with each other and on Judy’s blog. So make sure to check out Judy’s post about this quilt-along and follow her blog. Add it to your Google Reader ASAP!
Where do I get the Pattern?
This quilt-along requires you to buy the pattern. You should order it this week for sure so you have it in time to begin the first month of the quilt-along on January 24th. The pattern is available on Pat Wys’s website – SilverThimbleQuilt.com. The pattern is $22.00 and trust me, it is worth every penny. The pattern instructions are great, she has pictures in color of each block and the applique pieces are printed on one side only. Like I said, worth every penny!
You should also take a minute to add Pat’s blog to your Google Reader and bookmark her website. In January of 2012 I had the pleasure of attending a retreat where Pat was the featured instructor. She taught an amazing class using her Spotlight on Neutrals book as the inspiration. It was fabulous and she even signed my book! If she is ever in a city near you make sure to sign up for the class – you will love it! That is also why I am so excited to make her Comfort and Joy Christmas Quilt in this quilt-along. It is just an adorable quilt and thankfully we have all year to get it done for Christmas 2013!
How much Fabric do I need?
Scraps, scraps and more scraps! If you look at the pattern closely most of the pieces can be pulled from fat quarters, fat eighths and maybe even the “too small to keep” stash! For my quilt I went into my stash and pretty much found everything I needed. I may need to add a few pieces here in there but I even scrounged up enough for my borders and backing. Brittany made me – yes, made me – organize ALL of my fabric a few months ago. It took all weekend and I wasn’t very happy while doing it but it was handy to go over to my “Christmas” tower of drawers and find everything I needed. (She says this is payback for me making her keep her room clean as a kid. Wait until she has kids…)
Technically the back of the pattern lists…
- 1 1/2 yd assorted reds
- 1 1/2 yd assorted greens
- 1 yd assorted yellows/golds/lights
- 1 yd assorted reds
- 1 yd assorted greens
- 3/4 yd assorted tans/yellows/golds
- 1/4 yd face fabric

How often do we Share our Progress?
This is all about sharing our quilt so share as often as you want! Here on our blog and on our Facebook page I promise to share at the end of every month what progress I have made in following along with Judy’s quilt-along. I would love for you to share your progress here with us but don’t forget to share it on Judy’s blog, too! I am not sure if she is going to have a specific place for us to share our work – like a Flicker Group – but we will follow her blog closely and share those details with you. Brittany said it would be fun to have a quilt-along board on Pinterest so we may do that…will let you know.
Does Stitches of Love plan to host a Quilt-Along?
Yes! As a matter of fact we planned our entire year out. We know when we are launching quilt-alongs, free patterns, new patterns for sale and more! Brittany and I sat down on New Year’s Day and planned our entire year! We have all kinds of fun stuff planned to share with you. In a few days we will announce more details but suffice it say that we will have 1 quilt-along where we design the pattern and give it to you for free with tutorials AND another quilt-along that is going to be one of our latest patterns for sale. Sounds fun, right?!
So buy your pattern, follow Judy’s blog, stay connected with us here on our blog and on our Facebook Page and get ready for some fun! (Man we sound bossy, huh?)
