Hey Stitch Cutie,
Today’s tip builds on buttonhole or blanket stitch width and length for your machine applique projects. Yesterday, Julie shared a good width and length to start with for large and medium sized applique pieces. Today, Julie reveals a good size to start with for small applique pieces! First, here is a close up of some very small applique stitches. Take a look at the flower centers:
See how little the stitches are? Here is the tip for today:
Also, in the picture of the flowers in the brown barrel, you will see that Julie mixed several different stitches in one area. First, you have the shorter stitch length with a classic buttonhole stitch on the flower centers. Then you have the slightly larger buttonhole stitch on the barrel and the aqua stripe on the barrel. Finally, you have a simple straight stitch just about 1/8″ in from the outside of the flowers. As I mentioned in Day Four, it’s OK to mix up stitches!
You can try this out on your machine. It’s easy, simply take a motif from a machine applique project you are currently working on and make it out of scraps. Try out stitch lengths and you will find the perfect length for you project!
