Press! Press! Press! That’s something you’ll hear all the time in our sewing room here at the office.
What are we pressing? Seams, of course!
It may seem silly to talk about something as simple as pressing your seams, but in reality a few simple tips about pressing can really up your piecing game and make your quilts turn out even better!
Here are the simple steps for pressing perfectly pieced quilt blocks:
- Set your seam. Simply place your iron over a sewn, flat seam.
- Finger press your seam to one side or open. Use your fingers to gently guide your seam to either one side or open so that your fabric is in place before you apply additional heat. Your pattern will direct you in most cases as to which direction to press your seams.
- Press your seam. Apply your iron to your seam and press. We like to use dry heat which means no steam.
Julie and I both press every single time we make a seam. To make this easy, set up your Steady Betty and SteamFast Travel Iron right beside your sewing machine. This way all you do is swivel in your chair and press. Once we get to the end of a quilt block we will then go to our big iron and set the entire block.
